Each season and every lawn brings its own unique challenges, but these general guidelines will get you off to a great start.

March/April

  • Rake and clear debris from the lawn after snow melts
  • Apply pre-emergent herbicides (like Dimension 270G) before crabgrass germinates (~55°F)
  • Start mowing as the lawn begins to grow
  • Aerate and dethatch your lawn
  • Patch bare spots with new seeding
  • Apply your first application of fertilizer to give your lawn a boost as it comes out of dormancy

May/June

  • Begin irrigating regularly and ensure adequate coverage across your lawn
  • Established lawns require about 1 inch of water per week
  • Apply a slow-release fertilizer to prevent burning the turf while keeping your lawn fed and healthy throughout the summer

July/August

  • Raising the mower height will help your grass better deal with heat stress and drought conditions
  • Limit foot traffic on areas of highly stressed turf and irrigate regularly in the cool of the mornings or evenings

October

  • Fall is an ideal time to overseed your lawn
  • Clearing or mulching leaves will improve your lawn’s health
  • Continue to water as needed
  • Mow lawn until it is no longer growing and enters dormancy
  • Fertilize about six weeks before the first frost to ensure your lawn has the nutrition to pop back up healthy and green next spring
